United Nations, Jan 15 (Agencies) The pro tempore presidency of Cuba in front of the G77+China called for unity and multilateralism as a priority for the bloc, made up of 134 countries from Africa, Latin America and Asia, of the 193 that are UN members.
This was stated during the ceremony of the transfer of command to Cuba at the United Nations headquarters by the head of state of the Caribbean island, Miguel Díaz-Canel, while urging actions to overcome obstacles to the real progress of the peoples: «Today unity is an imperative and the greatest of all urgencies,» he noted in a video message.
The president insisted on the commitment of his country to work for the development of nations with which he -he said- Cuba shares a history of abuses, but also common goals and hopes.
Along the same lines, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez insisted on strengthening alliances within the organization in what he described as difficult times.
Only by building consensus is it possible to move towards the realization of legitimate development aspirations, added the head of Foreign Relations while insisting on the defense of common interests.
In this regard, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, recalled the relevance of the group as «an example of multilateralism in action.»
