Havana, July 31st. (Agencies) A new group of young people from the US, the Caribbean and Africa graduated as doctors from the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), an institution that aims to train health professionals from developing nations.
More than 800 new doctors will join to strengthen the health services of a dozen countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States, mainly the Republic of Congo, Angola, Namibia and the United States.
The rector of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, Mairim Lago, said at the graduation ceremony that Cuba is committed to the formation of a revolutionary, ethical professional, with high values and principles of humanism and solidarity, with the task of leading the health to their respective peoples.
According to a report by the Cuban News Agency, the act highlighted the contribution of the graduates to the Cuban nation’s fight against the pandemic caused by Covid-19.
The director of the XXXII Pastors for Peace Caravan Gail Walker, visiting Cuba and attending the activity, highlighted the support of this institution for the training of more than 200 American doctors, who develop ties of brotherhood with colleagues from other countries.
Founded in 1999 under the action and political will of Fidel Castro, ELAM educates hundreds of humble young people free of charge who, after completing their studies, will return to their communities to contribute to the sustainability of their health systems.
The main objective of the institution is the training of Basic General Practitioners, oriented to the work of primary health care and with a high scientific, humanistic, ethical and supportive training.
