US mayors interested in medical collaboration with Cuba

Washington, Jan 20 (Agencias) A group of mayors from the United States today shows interest in Cuba’s medical collaboration, especially the Henry Reeve internationalist brigade, which supported the fight against Covid-19 in various parts of the world.

This was reported by the website of The Washington Informer, which offers details on the obstacles that Washington imposes on medical aid from the largest of the Antilles.

He points out that just when the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 is spreading through the northern nation, a group of local leaders is preparing to encourage the Joe Biden administration to annul the long-standing fence that prevents Cuban health professionals from helping doctors on American soil.

On December 20, when there was a marked increase in Covid-19 infections and hospitalizations in the United States, the founder and general director of the World Conference of Mayors, Johnny Ford, met with Cuban diplomats to address this issue.

The Cuban Ambassador to the United States, Lianys Torres, and the deputy permanent representative of the island’s mission to the United Nations, Yuri Gala, were among the participants in this meeting with the former mayor of Tuskegee, Alabama.

For almost two hours, indicates The Washington Informer, they discussed Cuba’s efforts to stop the pandemic, despite the obstacles of Washington’s economic, commercial and financial blockade, which prevents access to necessary medicines and resources.

They also talked about the creation of Cuban vaccines against Covid-19, successfully used to immunize the population of the Caribbean country and other states such as Venezuela and Vietnam.

Ahead of the upcoming World Conference of Mayors Convention in Eatonville, Fla., and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s efforts to engage the Black Mayors Association and the National Conference of Black Mayors, Ford anticipated more opportunities to lobby to Biden about Cuban medical collaboration.

«Cuba can be of great help to us and we want to find a way to use its experience,» stressed the director general of the World Conference of Mayors.

That is why we are going to work to convince the US government to allow this cooperation, he added, quoted by The Washington Informer.

White House media representatives did not respond to that outlet’s query about the consideration that the Biden administration has given to this request.

According to international statistics, Cuba – with its high anti-Covid-19 vaccination rates globally – is among the leaders in this area globally.

The World Conference of Mayors is an entity through which municipal, national and foreign leaders establish relationships of trust and create trade and investment opportunities.
