President Díaz-Canel thanks the Virtual Solidarity Meeting of Africa with Cuba

– President of the Cuban Parliament, Esteban Lazo, insists on strengthening relations with Africa

Havana, Oct 7 (Agencies) The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, thanked the celebration of the VII African Continental Meeting of Solidarity with the Caribbean nation, which took place this Thursday virtually.

Díaz-Canel highlighted the common roots, the struggles and the shared blood, and evoked the legacy of historical leaders of both territories, such as Fidel Castro, Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, Nelson Mandela, Thomas Sankara and Oliver Tambo, among others.

For his part, the president of the National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament) of Cuba, Esteban Lazo, insisted on the need to strengthen cooperative relations with Africa for the benefit of both peoples.

In his intervention at the event, Lazo advocated strengthening and energizing the bilateral legislative bodies, based on exchanges of information, experiences and consultations.

He also thanked the participants in the meeting for supporting the battle against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the Caribbean nation for almost six decades, exacerbated with 243 coercive measures in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. .

The meeting organized by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) had among its objectives to strengthen ties between the African continent and the Antillean country, and allowed those present to ratify their rejection of Washington’s hostile policy against the island.

The meeting paid tribute to Fidel Castro and Ernesto Guevara, internationalist symbols in the struggles for the independence of the peoples.

In the contest, initiatives were presented and opinions were exchanged on strategies to follow in favor of solidarity with Cuba, and against the economic, commercial and financial siege of the United States.
