"An Island on a Continent"

"The greatest crime that can be committed against this continent today is neocolonialism, the attempt to establish capitalism in the peoples of Africa." Fidel Castro

Thousands of people in some 60 cities around the world expressed their rejection of the US blockade against Cuba

– The president of the Gambia-Cuba Friendship Association, J ModouPeh Grant, wrote: «We unite with all peace-loving people in the world to fight together with them against the blockade.»

Havana, March 29 (Agencies) Neither the language, geographic or health barriers caused by Covid-19 prevented activists from building Bridges of Love in some 60 cities around the world for solidarity with Cuba and against the US blockade.

In those places where physical encounters were not possible, social networks played an important role with the hashtags # NoMásBloqueo, #JuntosXCuba, #PuentesDeAMor, #PorLaFamilia, #SomosUno and #CubaVsBloqueo.

The initiative, organized by Cuban emigres and friends from the island, was different in each place and exceeded the expectations of its main promoters, including the Puentes de Amor project by Cuban-American Carlos Lazo and the YouTube channel Europa for Cuba.

Lazo commented on his satisfaction with the results of last weekend’s sessions and called for a new unprecedented global caravan for next April 25 with the same objective.

According to the professor, in about 15 American cities and seven in Canada, the participants also demanded an end to the siege against Cuba.

Activist Erik Fundora, who lives in Miami, the place where the caravans began nine months ago, described the mobilization carried out in that town in the US state of Florida as a success.

Speaking to the Prensa Latina news agency, he stressed that only love can put an end to «all the criminal laws imposed against my country.»

Organizations and Cubans in Russia, Italy, France, Germany, Namibia, Gambia, Angola, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, China, among dozens of other nations, carried out events, publications on the web and support actions.

In a statement, the president of the Gambia-Cuba Friendship Association, J ModouPeh Grant, stated: “We unite with all peace-loving people in the world together with the fight against the economic, commercial and financial siege that Washington imposes on the Caribbean island”.

Once again it is shown that the island is not alone in its fight against the economic, commercial and financial siege, stressed José Antonio Toledo and Michele Mesagna, the moderators of the Europa for Cuba channel, who also highlighted the celebration of initiatives with a wide impact on social media.

According to activists, the global caravan constitutes a new rejection of the blockade by the international community, the same one that has voted every year since 1992 in the United Nations against that siege, even if Washington decides to ignore it.

Exclusively for Prensa Latina, the president of the Foundation for the Normalization of Cuba-United States Relations, Elena Freyre, assured that these mobilizations also show the love of Cuban emigrants for their people.

In Havana, thousands of people also denounced the genocidal and unjust nature of the northern blockade and thanked the demonstrations of support around the world.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel described the international solidarity day as exciting, highlighted the Puentes de Amor project and the role of the island’s youth.
