Cuban President: the revolution is a struggle for the future

Havana. (Prensa Latina) The Revolution is a struggle for the future of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel declared when he was elected and proclaimed President of the Republic of Cuba by the National Assembly of Popular Power (ANPP) on Oct. 10.

Díaz-Canel’s speech was primarily directed at Cuban youth, which represents the future of the nation, he said.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel gave his inauguration speech for a term until 2023, which could be renewed for another five years, according to the new Constitution approved by the Cubans in April.

He reiterated his call to «think like a country» by denouncing that the United States is intensifying its hostility and tightening the economic, financial and commercial blockade against the island.

He also referred to the current global situation, marked by what he described as the illegality of Washington in its policy of punishing and subverting third countries.

Díaz-Canel rejected the use of the United Nations General Assembly platform to lie about Cuba and its international humanitarian medical cooperation, as well as to seek intervention, including military intervention, against other countries.

He criticized a world in which the judiciary is used to imprison progressive leaders and persecute social activists.

A world that alarms us all as we watch the Amazon burn, he emphasized.

The Cuban president said that given this reality, Cuba strengthens its defense and its economy. In this regard, he called for more efficient, save and increase exports of goods and services.

Díaz-Canel congratulated his countrymen on the 151 anniversary of the beginning of the wars of independence of Cuba. October 10, 1868 was the first day of freedom, he concluded.

In addition to his election as president of Cuba, members of the National Assembly of Popular Power (ANPP, parliament) elected Salvador Valdés Mesa as Vice President of the country, and Esteban Lazo Hernández as president of the legislative body and the State Council.

The new members of the State Council were also elected.
